The San Francisco Chronicle recently crowned Michele Holmes "The Brow Whisperer," and shortly afterward this much-buzzed about, downright gifted "feathered brow" specialist landed in GOOP's San Francisco Wellness Guide. This month, Michele brings her luxury brow service directly to a gorgeous San Anselmo Seminary home on one of her luxe house visits for Hoodvibe. Armed with a kit full of delicious aromatherapy brow oils, a carefully curated assortment of brow make-up, and her trademark golden tools, Michele wowed us all as we enjoyed a blissful morning of at-home brow shaping.
The Set Up.
Michele is the kind of down-to-earth Marin gal (she and her husband live in the sweet Bret Harte neighborhood of San Rafael with their two-year old daughter) that walks in the door and instantly fits in with our cluster of chatty Marin moms. Despite her Hollywood connections (Michele trained and works with Kristie Streicher of Striiike Salon Beverly Hills, the girl who put the arch in Adele's eyebrows for the August cover of Vogue, and whose clients also include Sarah Paulson, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Emily Blunt), Michele is as unpretentious as she is talented, and can as easily weigh in on the season finale of Girls as well as rub elbows with Gwyneth at the GOOP MRKT. She expertly sets up her home visit in the glamorous kitchen of Erin Heath's gorgeously remodeled Victorian in the San Anselmo Seminary neighborhood, unpacking an array of glistening gold tweezers, tiny scissors, plus fancy all-natural oils and creams laced with delicious-smelling essential oils from Kristie Streicher's line. Needless to say, we were all impressed.
Watching Michele work on eyebrows it's easy to understand why her business has exploded in popularity to the point where requests for at-home brow visits from swanky Pacific Heights to Ross to Piedmont are off the hook. She's an artist with an eye for detail. Her work process is smooth and meticulous, the end result being perfectly feathered brows that create the natural look that we love in Marin County. As an added bonus, after Michele tells us how fuller brows impart a "youthful" look, one of our sample group verified that theory when she was carded for buying a bottle of wine at Woodlands Market later that evening. Not that we care, but...
Each eyebrow session starts with Michele giving the full facial once-over, computing the perfect brow color to match your hair and complexion and deciding how she'll shape your brows to highlight your features. She moves into action by cleansing the brow area, then mixing and applying the custom tint. Afterward, she applies Streicher Aforé oil, which is filled with natural essential oils like Argan Moroccan that make the whole process less painful and smells intoxicating, then begins expertly tweezing and shaping. Next, Michele applies Aprés calming cream (this one is mixed up with a natural version of cortisone, Berbereis Aquifolium, and calming oils like Roman chamomile and calendula), which smells so wonderful and feels so good you think maybe you've actually enjoyed the process of having hair tweezed and chatting to Michele so much, you start mentally booking your next appointment. To add the finishing touches, Michele grooms the newly-shaped, perfect brows into place with a brow make-up lesson and application. She writes up a customized brow make-up recipe, so you know exactly how to apply on your own and keep your brows looking amazing. One of her favorite products is the Troy Suratt Expressionist Pencil, now available at Space NK at the Marin Country Mart, which she uses to carefully fill-in only where necessary along the brow line. Another favorite is Charlotte Tilbury legendary brows clear gel.
